Snowed In? This Might Be Even Better Than Netflix

Let's Turn a Snow Day Into a Productivity Win

When a snowstorm hits, our schedules get thrown off — canceled appointments, kids home from school, traffic delays, and unexpected pockets of free time.

Once you’re done shoveling, it’s tempting to default to TV, scrolling social media, or snacking on something you’ll regret later. But instead of letting the day slip away, here are some simple, productive ways to use that time to strengthen your business, feel more organized, and get ahead of the competition.

Refresh Your Website or Social Media Profiles

When was the last time you really looked at your online presence? If it makes you cringe even a little, today’s the day to fix it. If you’re not sure how to make changes, grab a notebook and write out what you wish each page said. You can update it yourself later or hand it off to someone who can help.

Update Your Bio

Your bio is often your first impression. Make sure it reflects what you’re doing now, not what you were doing years ago, and that it’s written to attract clients, speaking opportunities, collaborations, and publicity. Tip: Be sure to update your Pittsburgh Professional Women listing, too!

If your photo is more than three to five years old, it may be time for an update. A snow day is a great opportunity to research photographers or look for upcoming mini business photo shoots you can take advantage of. A fresh photo and updated bio can make a bigger impact than you think.

Send a Thank-You Card

A handwritten note still stands out. Choose a few clients and send a genuine “thank you for your business” card. It’s a small gesture that leaves a big impression — especially in a digital world where real mail is rare.

Organize Your Workspace

If opening your office door makes you feel overwhelmed, it’s time to reset. Create three piles: To Do, To Read, and To Recycle or Donate.

Let go of books, tools, and supplies you no longer use. Clear space creates mental clarity.

Eliminate Clutter

Take a look around your home, office, and even your car. Too much clutter drains energy and focus. Let go of what no longer serves you so you can create space for what truly matters.

Update Your Contacts

That stack of business cards on your desk? Today’s the day.

Update your contact list, remove outdated information, and clean up your database. There are probably people you’ve been meaning to call, as well as contacts who have moved away, changed careers, or retired. Clearing out old contacts makes room for stronger, more meaningful connections.

Create a Simple Publicity Plan

Most business owners have a business plan and a marketing plan, but not a publicity plan.

Start simple. List the next 12 months. Choose one topic per month related to your expertise. Align topics with seasons or holidays. Schedule time to write or share each one. Planning ahead makes visibility easier and far less stressful.

Revisit Your Goals

You probably started the year with good intentions — maybe even a fresh list of goals. Now that we’re a few weeks into January, it’s the perfect time to pause and check in with yourself.

Are your goals still realistic? Do they still feel aligned with what you actually want this year? If not, that’s okay. This is your opportunity to adjust, simplify, or recommit without guilt. Progress matters more than perfection.

Review Insurance Policies

Home. Auto. Life. Business. Are you properly covered?

When was the last time you reviewed your insurance policies? Life changes quickly, and coverage that made sense a few years ago may no longer fit your current situation. Take time to review your home, auto, life, and umbrella policies.

Have you checked your beneficiary designations lately? Make sure all names and information are accurate and up to date.

Regarding your business insurance, review your policy carefully. If you’ve added equipment, expanded services, hired team members, or shifted the way you work, your coverage may need to be updated.

Revisit - or Begin Financial Plans

A snow day is also a great time to check in on your finances. When was the last time you reviewed your financial goals, savings plan, or retirement contributions?

Life and business evolve, and your financial plan should evolve with you. Take a few minutes to review your accounts, revisit your goals, and make sure your money is aligned with where you want to go. Even small adjustments now can make a big difference over time.

If you work with a financial advisor, this is a great opportunity to schedule a check-in or make a list of questions you’ve been meaning to ask.

Read a Good Book

If you’re like me, you probably have a stack of unread books waiting for your attention. Pull out a few you’ve been meaning to read. Place one on your nightstand, one on your desk, and one near where you usually watch television. Snow days are perfect for catching up on some good reads.

Add Pittsburgh Professional Women Events to Your Calendar

Having an unexpected break is a great time to plan ahead for the workshops and events you want to attend. New events are always being added. See the current schedule here.

And Finally, Step Away

Snow days look different for everyone, and for some families, they can bring added stress or challenges. But if you’re fortunate enough to have a bit of unexpected time, consider it a gift. Along with taking care of a few things for your business, you might also use the time to connect with the people you love, enjoy the snow, or slow down and savor a quiet moment.

This may be the last snowfall of the year, and that’s a good reason to step away from your desk, even briefly.
